"Oomph" by Viola Grasten, Sweden 1955
Part 1: Research

How it's Done.

  1. Research textiles from the SoHE Helen Louise Allen Textile Collection and chose one for inspiration.
  2. Research the political and societal influences that were happening during the time your textile was produced.
  3. Using your chosen textile as inspiration, sketch designs of six chair concepts from two different angles.

Why this Textile?

The textile, called "Oomph" by Viola Grasten, was produced in Sweden in 1955. I chose this textile because I really liked the colors and shapes it incorporated. I especially noticed how the many triangles came together to form other shapes like circles and created a sense of movement.

Sweden experienced a ‘textile boom’ in the post-war period illustrated by an all-time high in the industry, with almost 53,000 workers employed between 1950 and 1951.

From the turn of the century until the late 1950s, the Swedish cotton industry was the single largest sub-sector.
